Beauty 4 Life is a socially minded micro-business designed to empower women in Kampala, Uganda so they can support their families and get their children off of streets and out of wars. Through a purchase of a necklace, the women are given access to the international market, so they can sell their jewelry and earn a sustainable income to providing housing, food, and education to their families. All jewelry is made from 100% recycled paper and other African materials and 100% of the profits go back to the Ugandan women.
During the summer of 2009, Catherine Mitchell, the founder of Beauty 4 Life, went to Uganda to visit a family friend where she helped out at an orphanage called Dwelling Places. At the orphanage, she was given a delicate bracelet crafted from scrap paper and scavenged beads. On the 22-hour flight home, she was so moved by the story of street children and child soldiers that she made a plan to turn her vacation into a vocation: empowering women and providing education. She landed in San Diego with a plan: to create a micro-business to sell the unique handmade jewelry. A few months later, Catherine started Beauty 4 Life.
Beauty 4 Life has a two-fold purpose. First, to empower women so they can educate their children, provide for their families, and keep their children out of wars. Secondly, to develop the “Africans caring for Africans” organizational model, which creates dignity by allowing them to improve their lives, their families, and their communities.
